You might hate those ubiquitous faded pink flamingoes in your neighbor's yard, so it's almost a shock to actually see thousands of flamingoes standing there before you in all their natural glory.
Lake Nakuru National Park is several hours north of Nairobi, and we traveled there by car after our two days at the Masai Mara Game Reserve. I have to admit I was the one pushing for it because the thought of 10,000 flamingoes seemed very appealing. Yes, there were more flamingoes than you will ever see in your life because of the alkalinity of the lake, and I took about twenty pictures of them, but then I began to get frustrated because all my pictures looked pretty much alike. You stand on a slightly muddy shore, so you really can't move around much to change your perspective. Still, it is amazing to see flamingoes in layer upon layer of pink horizon.
From the flamingoes, we went on a search for rhinos, met a lot of monkeys along the way, but by the time we found the rhinos, it was pouring down rain. I stuck my head out the window and took pictures of the rhinos because I might not ever get another chance to see these magnificent beasts go rumbling by so close to our car. The next mornignm the rain had thankfully blown over, and we were able to take pictures of some dried out muddy rhinos.
It was a nice park, and it was on the way to Kabernet where we were visiting a World Vision child, but with so few days on safari, I probably would have chosen another park to spend one of our precious three days.
