One of the most colorful events of Washington State is the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival held each April.
Vibrant colors of millions of tulips can be seen each April in the rural community just outside Mount Vernon, WA. Visit the web site for details.
Many people just can’t wait for spring to arrive, and I’m certainly no different. But springtime in the northwest part of the continental United States can be sometimes rather unpredictable. The old adage goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” But some flowers don’t wait for May and in the fertile Skagit Valley of Washington State, it’s the month of April that predictably brings the flowers—daffodils and tulips that is.
I had the pleasure of living in the small town of Mount Vernon, WA for about 15 years and watched with delight each April when this town of, what was then about 15,000 in population, became a destination point for many thousands more, as the fields come alive with the beautiful, colorful tulips. This year marks the 25 anniversary of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival but rather than explaining the details of the event to you, I invite you to visit their website on your own at http://www.tulipfestival.org. I can almost guarantee that once you see the events scheduled, you’ll want to get started on planning your trip. One word of advice—get started now so you’ll be able to enjoy the best accommodations. April is just around the corner, so stay in touch with the festival organizers to find out just when the blooming begins.
Now, Mount Vernon has grown considerably since I lived there (now boasting a population of over 30,000), but I’m happy to report that the warm welcome I received in the early 70’s still exists today. Whether you shop the quaint little shops of the original “downtown” section, or decide the malls are more your style, the people are the same. It’s a culture made up of farmers and doctors, authors and fishermen, teachers and truck drivers—just like you find in every other community. The difference is the mood, the feeling of maybe just stepping back in time to a slower, gentler existence. And that mood is even more prevalent during the tulip festival. Even with growing crowds and the challenges that brings, one cannot help but feel that these “tulip growers”, and other supporting vendors are truly happy to see, and service (with a smile), each and every visitor. See for yourself and tell me of your experience.
This article is about the tulip festival, but while you’re in the neighborhood, don’t pass up the opportunity to explore the surrounding area. Anacortes, LaConner, Burlington and Sedro Woolley all have many great areas of interest. Whether your inclined to go sightseeing for eagles, jig for smelt, play golf on some of the most beautiful, lush courses anywhere, or just watch the tide come in—Skagit County is a place you’ll not only thoroughly enjoy, but visit again and again.
I’ve selected some of my favorite tulip images to accompany this article and I hope you enjoy them. However, the real thrill is found in taking your own photographs. Be sure to stop in at Tulip Town (directions will be in the brochure you can order from the web site), and visit with my good friend, Dave Groves. Dave has been in the photography business for many years and can not only outfit you with supplies, but offer tips on the best locations to take your prize winning shot. I truly hope you have a great time experiencing the wonderful Skagit Valley during the Tulip Festival.
