Leave the hussle and bussle of the city outside and have a wander round the beautiful garden and buildings of this haven for the arts.

The bronze sculpture of a man holding a mask is a well known landmark not just at Darat al Funun centre of arts but also in Amman, Jordan.

There is a place in Amman where I like to have a wander round. When I'm tired of taking photos and lugging my camera bag around, I like to have a peaceful couple of hours at a place I discovered and where I never tire of visiting again. There's something really zen and peaceful about it that it seems to restore my inner batteries when I need a break.

Located in Jabal al Webdeh, one of the oldest parts of Amman, Darat Al Funun, which literally means house of art in Arabic, is housed in three historical houses dating from the 1920’s. Overlooking the hills of Amman, this art haven was established in 1993 by the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation as a specialised centre for the arts and the artists of Jordan and the Arab world. Its beautiful mature garden full of aromatic plants and flowering bushes, is an oasis of peace and an attraction in itself. This garden also features the archaeological remains of a Byzantine church dating from the 6th century which was originally built on a Roman temple. Roman period columns with Corinthian architecture adorn the lowest part of the garden. This part of the complex is very popular as a venue for open air musical recitals and plays during the summer months.

The buildings were all carefully restored in the 90’s by the reknowned Jordanian architect Ammar Khammash. The authentic old floor tiles, rich in patterns and colours were retained and grace the rooms with old charm. These buildings now incorporate four exhibition halls, projection hall, lecture rooms, guest residence for visiting artists, studios and workshops. They also serve as a venue for the performing arts.

A leafy courtyard at the highest part of this compound opposite the building called ‘The Blue House’ serves as a relaxing café. One can sit quietly near the traditional fountain drinking an excellent Turkish coffee whilst admiring the stunning view over this part of Amman. When I'm sitting there by the fountain sipping my coffee, it seems that the hussle and bussle of the city outside doesn't exist.

The Foundation also features the permanent display of Khalid Shoman’s art collection. The over 500 pieces collected from 11 arab countries include pottery, sculptures, prints and paintings.

Exhibitions are ongoing at Darat al Funun, so you will always find something interesting taking place. Some of the works exhibited are also for sale to the public. Whether a film projection, photo exhibition or a display of sculptures and oil paintings, this interesting landmark is a must for lovers of art and culture.
