Gear: A tasty post-Soviet treat

Traveling in the former Soviet Union and looking for a tasty snack? Try a сырок!

Product name: сырок (pronounced see-ROHK)

For travelers in the former Soviet Union, the general lack of translation into English or transliteration into the Latin alphabet can make shopping a challenge. I doubt I would have ever tried a сырок (pronounced see-ROHK) had it not been recommended to me - and now сыроки are some of my favorite snacks. There are many different brands of сырок, and I haven't found a сырок I didn't like. Essentially, a сырок is a small candy-bar sized treat, made of a substance resembling cheesecake ("сыр" means cheese). This is then dipped in a thin coating of chocolate. Sounds delicious, right? Well, hold on - there's more! In the center of a сырок is a filling - and the filling varies: chocolate, caramel, jams and more. Heaven! Сыроки are found in the dairy section of most post-Soviet supermarkets, so be sure to snag one the next time you have the chance!
