Just south of Miami, this 13-square-mile jewel of a city sparkles with attractions.
Affectionately known by locals as the “City Beautiful,” there is
indeed something unique about this charming, laid-back community just south of Miami. Some say it’s the Mediterranean theme and, of course, the bright sunshine. Others say it’s the relaxed atmosphere in an uncrowded portion of old Miami.
Founded in 1920 by developer George Merrick, who dreamed of creating a beautiful, Mediterranean-themed community, this 13-square mile jewel of a city is today one of Miami’s most beautiful. Here, with wide boulevards lined with Mediterranean revival-style mansions, graceful fountains and coral rock pools, tropical gardens and luxurious golf courses, elegance meets tranquility.
Start your visit at the amazing Venetian Pool, an 820,000-gallon extravaganza complete with cascading waterfalls, coral caves, and even a small, sandy beach. Open-year-round, the spring-fed pool is often called the “world’s most beautiful public swimming pool.”
Then head for the city’s historic Biltmore Hotel. Restored in 1926, the building, modeled after the famous Giralda Tower in Seville Spain, offers luxury accommodations and provides a glimpse of the elegance of the past. You’ll marvel at its luxurious pool, said to be the largest hotel swimming pool in the continental United States. Also, the spectacular lobby will take your breath away. Free tours of the hotel, a national historic landmark, are offered on Sunday afternoons.
After you check out the DeSoto Plaza and Fountain, the Spanish Moorish Alhambra Water Tower, and admire the architecture that gives the city stopped-in-time ambience, there’s a lot to see and do downtown on the famed Miracle Mile. Explore the shops, art galleries and lively restaurants that line this pedestrian-friendly stretch through one of the areas elaborate Mediterranean-style gateways.
For a little beach time, the popular Matheson Hammock County Park, with its deep-blue waters has nice, gentle surf. But don't forget your suntan lotion. Temperatures average in the 80s most of the year, except in the summer when it can get very hot.
Nature-lovers can escape to a tropical paradise in the well-known Fairchild Tropical Garden. Also, the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami offers some cultural stimulation. Art lovers will enjoy the local scene during the Gables Gallery Night on the first Friday of each month.
