A peek into a bustling yet rarely-seen stretch of the Jersey coast.
I was recently afforded an intimate look inside a giant cargo vessel during its brief berth at the shipping yards of the port of Bayonne, New Jersey. Hailing from Singapore, owned by a danish company with an indian crew, the recent ports of call of this international shipping collossus were spewed forth by the captain in a mind boggling string of continental hops. The ship was carrying thousands of shiny new cars, which rolled out blindingly among the dull semi-truck containers stacked in staggering cubicles around them.
We were led through endless hallways and vast cavernous tangles of machinery. It was astounding to me that vessel so enormous was manned by fewer than two dozen men. In charge was the captain "I am the eyes" and the first engineer "I am the heart, without the heart you die!" who pointed out various knobs and levers and maps and screens.
