Saint Francis Cathedral stands as a perfect symbol for Santa Fe's moniker "City Different." The cathedral is a flowing eclectic mix of styles ranging from traditional adobe to Romanesque and Gothic styles.
The cathedral's Romanesque Revival styled towers were originally planned to be the base for impressive 160-foot steeples, but due to lack of funds these were never built. The left tower is actually a single row of bricks taller than the right tower. The overall design was influenced by French-born Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy who started the project in 1869. One of the best impacts of his influence for me is the large rose window, imported from Clermont-Ferrand in France and brought into town on a covered wagon. If you visit Santa Fe be sure to tour this fascinating structure.
Snow Geese numbering in the thousands upon thousands take their first morning flight at sunrise. Flyout at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico during migration is something everyone should see! If you are lucky you will be rewarded with a beautiful sunrise for your efforts at getting up before dawn. Sandhill Cranes can number as high as 17,000 on the refuge, and Snow Geese counts exceed 50,000. On top of these impressive numbers are many species of raptors, tens of thousands of ducks and multitudes of other species. Bosque is a top birding destination!
A view illuminated by a near full moon looking down specialized train tracks that are used for positioning the 27 independent radio antennae into position at the Very Large Array near Socorro, New Mexico. This is where the movie Contact was based. This is also really a fantastic place to visit at night under a full moon.
