Trekking through the jungle in Pai in northern Thailand close to the Burma border one must have a fearless guide. Yes, we saw some tiger tracks and so I asked what one asks when in the jungle and coming into contact with a tiger is a real possibility, "What should we do if we come across a tiger?" Lert smiles wide from ear to ear and says nothing. "Seriously," I say "what should we do?" Lert looks at us, unsheathes these two motherf**kers and says, "don't worry I take care of it." And he strikes this wicked pose.
Arriving back to the city from a tour along the mighty Mekong our bus became enveloped by the masses during rush hour traffic in Saigon.

In front of the Museo de Arte Contemporanio de Barcelona is the spot to be to just hang out and people watch.
The heart in your throat bus ride, it's 110 degrees, the smell of incense and jasmine wafting through the air, swarms of people, fifteen beautifully adorned elephants march side by side, the steady jingle from their oversized anklets, the beat of ceremonial drums, the subtle unease knowing 8 people died the day before from a fireworks malfunction. This is the Thrissur Pooram Festival in the town of Thrissur, a few hours north of Cochin. One of the largest Hindu Festivals in all of India.
The market in Trivandrum is a swirl of simple wood stalls filled with everything from packaged bindis and bangels to recently slaughtered goats hanging in the scorching sun. Tastey.
The majesty of the local market in Danishpet, Tamil Nadu with stalls overflowing with flowers and spices. Villagers gliding along in bright saris selecting their vegetables and other necessities for the day. The smell of curry and jasmine waft through the air. These sacks of spice and grain capture the beauty and vitality of this magical place.
Ko Phi Phi is a surreal destination. Yes, Leo made it famous with his mediocre performance in The Beach. Travelers come from all over in search of "the beach". This idea of a perfect paradise away from the responsibilities and realities of their everyday. Everyone is looking for their beach, that something that is almost unattainable. This image is from Phi Phi Don looking out at Phi Phi Lei. We are told this dramatic low tide is brought on by the black moon. A very special place to lose yourself for a few weeks and become one with your surroundings.
The Sri Venkateswara mat factory outside of Salem, Tamil Nadu is a place not many get to see. The factory provides mats to temples and homes all throughout India. They use japanese loom technology to weave the mats but much of the process is still done by hand. These men are dying the straw by dipping bundles into boiling petroleum based paint. Hard working men whose hands are stained by the colored dye they have worked with for years. We bought 20 of these beautiful intricately woven mats.
A special moment walking with the monks in Luang Prabang as they receive their morning alms.
