This is the entrance to one of the mortar batteries that were used to defend New York Harbor. The military installation was established during the War of 1812.

Along the main entrance to Sandy Hook in New Jersey, is this sea wall. Its main function is to help prevent flooding of the area during storms.

Guests at the park are seen sail surfing at the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area on the bay side. Atlantic Highlands and Highlands, New Jersey, can be seen on the horizon as weather starts to move into the area. Above one of the sails are two of the visitors to the bird sanctuary to which the Audobon Society maintains an office.

North of Fort Hancock on Sandy Hook is this U.S. Coast Guard Outpost run by the Department of Homeland Security. It is closed to visitors, but can be seen from the beaches on the bay side of Sandy Hook.

Sandy Hook Lighthouse is located in the center of the Fort Hancock complex at Sandy Hook. It is the longest continuos operating lighthouse in America since 1764.

The now defunct Fort Hancock is a fabulous spot for history buffs and beach lovers. located toward the end of the peninsula known as Sandy Hook. The row of quarters were for the US Army, that occupied this site.
