An added bonus to the beauty of the mature garden at Darat al Funun is the historical remains of a Byzantine church.

The fountain in the Courtyard

The fountain in the Courtyard

A beautiful venue for a quiet coffee with the sound of the water splashing in the fountain, the shade of the trees and the tranquility of the courtyard at Darat al Funun, a haven of art in Amman Jordan. You forget the hussle and bussle of the city and recharge your inner batteries by just being there.

The Sculpture

The bronze sculpture of a man holding a mask is a well known landmark not just at Darat al Funun centre of arts but also in Amman, Jordan.

The artist proudly exhibits his work at this trendy market open only in the summer months between June and October. If you are fed up with the tacky souvenirs that have mercylessly invaded every destination, then it's worth going for an origianl work of art which as I discovered does not have to cost the earth. The wooden frame on canvases can be removed and the canvas rolled up for easy transportation back home where it can be easily replaced.

At his desk near the window at Beit al Bawadi in Amman Jordan, the atist Suleiman Mohammed Salem recounted his story and answered my thousand and one questions about his paintings.

The portraits with vivid hues and hauntingly beautiful expressions by the Jordanian artist, tempted me to buy a couple to take back to my home in Malta.

A sawwas, or vendor of sous, chats and jokes with his customers while they drink. The customers stand on a patch of water where the vendor had just rinsed his glasses with the water from the jug hanging on his belt. All this is part of an entertaining service performed by these colourful juice vendors.

Marina at Vittoriosa, Malta

Marina at Vittoriosa, Malta

Maltese boats berthed along side modern yachts at Vittoriosa marina on the small Mediterranean Island of Malta. The historical surroundings make a fascinating backdrop for yachts visiting the island. Malta is often the venue for international yachting events such as the Rolex Middle Sea Race and the Powerboat P1 race, this year being held between 6-8 June.
