In 1748, construction of the cathedral began under the supervision of the Jesuit Order.
However, after their expulsion from Cuba by the Spanish Crown, the cathedral was completed by the Franciscan Order in 1777.
The cathedral is the only know example of Baroque architectural design that possesses asymmetrical features.
It is the seat of Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino, the Archbishop of Habana.
