Landwasser Viaduct

Landwasser Viaduct

A rail viaduct over the Landwasser River in Switzerland. It is a 65m high and 136m long six-arched curved single-tracked viaduct high in the Alps.

Built 1902 it is possibly one of the most famous railway viaducts / bridges in the world.

When approaching the viaduct the train travels through the Landwasser tunnel. The engineers had to build the viaduct starting at the end of the tunnel.

The construction of the viaduct is impressive for two reasons:

1. Materials had to be transported to this remote mountain site before construction could begin.

2. The height of the arches meant that traditional building techniques could not be used and new techniques had to be developed.
