The lighthouse at Cape Spear overlooks the rugged North Atlantic coast. You can't get much farther east in North America. Ireland is just over there. This lighthouse has guided many sailors through the dangerous seas and around this rocky coast.

As you walk down to the rugged shoreline, you'll be rewarded by paying some attention to the grasses and small plants and lichens that cling to the rocks. Remember: it's the North Atlantic out there!

It's a long walk up the hill to the lighthouse, and a shorter one down to the rocky shoreline. It's worth doing both.

The shoreline of Newfoundland is rocky and rugged. There are paths leading down to the water at Cape Spear. It can be dangerous to leave those paths. Fog and waves can appear as if out of nowhere.
