The approach into the park includes this very cool little piece of old Route 66.
Story written 12 November 2007
I had just pulled the motorcycle off "the slab" for a moment to investigate an intriguing side road....
Even though I gave the Mickey Mouse Plant a silly name it still made beautiful flowers during the day.
If you go to Nipton look for "Fred" he'll be around, and he will be more than happy to take you an an historic tour.
I could not help but think of this cactus as the Mickey Mouse plant.
Because it has been designated an National Historic Site, the Nipton Hotel has been restored to as it was in its heyday.
Nipton is still a working train-switching post. Most of the desert trains that come through have 16 engines-eight in the front and eight in the back. Often when they stop to switch at Nipton the crew will dismount the train and come into the little store for some refreshments.
Recently renewed to its original historic condition, the Nipton Hotel was once a favorite haunt of silent film stars.
The newly restored Nipton hotel on the California/Nevada border on a clear summer night.
