Night at Polihale

Night at Polihale

A closed down park with access only coming via a severely neglected dirt road? Sign us up. Thirty minutes after a wonderful sunset over Polihale State Park on the southwest shore of Kauai, the full moon began to peek over the cliffs of the Na Pali coast to dramatic effect. The closed campground was almost completely empty except for a few lucky souls that night, but all were well rewarded with this full moon.

Parliament Hill

Parliament Hill

Located in Hampstead Heath just to the North of London, Parliament Hill lends a great view of the city of London. The heath itself is a wonderful retreat away from the city life into nature.

Walking to St. Paul's

Walking to St. Paul's

My friends and I were headed to Tate Modern from St. Paul's Cathedral one night. I was really excited to get some night pictures taken of London and this is one of my favorites. Viewing back at St. Paul's from the view of a shoe on Millennium Bridge is quite nice.

The lonely streets of London

The lonely streets of London

I wandered alone one night from Victoria Station to Westminster Station, enjoying the famous sights of London slowly coming into view.

The Location of Arthur's Seat

The Location of Arthur's Seat

I paid a visit to Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh Scotland and knew exactly where I was standing in the world. It was a windy day, but picture perfect skies for everyone to enjoy.

London Eye

London Eye

My friends and I went to London for new years. We ended up getting stuck in a massive crowd just North of the Waterloo bridge unable to see the fireworks. After two hours of waiting the crowds cleared enough for us to continue our journey south for more debauchery. I took this right when we got to the south side of the bridge, still able to enjoy and appreciate the night despite the overwhelming mass of humanity.

Hitchin' a ride

Hitchin' a ride

After trying to hitch unsuccessfully out of Lihue for a bit of time there was some dissent to our plans. None of us had hitched before and didn't know how long it would take. Luckily, while we discussed our options, one of us still had a thumb out and we caught a ride. Once in the back of the truck, we were all smiles and having a great time. It was like getting a tour of Kauai for free. It was easy from then on and we were constantly humbled by the generosity of strangers.

Sun through the fog

Sun through the fog

With an East coaster and a Texan visiting me in Oregon, I couldn't help but take them to my favorite park on the West Coast: Redwoods National Park. The giant trees do their best to make you realize you've got nothing on what mother nature can create. Since we only had a short time to enjoy the Redwoods, I took my friends to the place where we could get the most bang for our buck. The best trail I've traveled is the steep Damnation Creek Trail just off Hwy 101. It's a beautiful yet strenuous 4 1/2 mile trail that eventually spits you out to the ocean shore. My friends were in awe (OK I was too) the whole time to be wandering through the ancient forest. After spending sometime striking various poses for pictures (Who can resist hugging a redwood?), playing on the awesome pebbled beach, and catching our breath we headed back up the precipitous trail. The overwhelmingly thick fog that had been upon us earlier was starting to break up and patches of sunlight began to filter through. We turned a corner on the trail and I stopped dead in my tracks staring up at the trees. The sun poured through the fog and foliage like spotlights on a stage. We took it all in for a few moments before pressing on. Before we knew it though we were back to the car, wishing the trail was just a little longer.

St. Paul's at night

St. Paul's at night

I snapped this one night while my friends and I were out for a stroll along the Thames. The long exposure time really highlights the Millennium bridge and St. Paul's nicely.
