Story written 13 May 2008
Beauty, suspense and a few good laughs as an east coast solo camper takes on the Pacific in Olympic National Park. (Bear box not included.)
Sitting beside my campfire during the most beautiful sunset I'd ever seen, I couldn't help but wonder whether a cougar might be poised to pounce on me from the spreading darkness. (See related article, "Wilderness Camping: An Olympic Event.")
This shelter—with its inverted boot hanging like a pirate flag—made for a creepy neighbor, but the site would have to do. There was nowhere else to camp. (See related article, "Wilderness Camping: An Olympic Event.")
Finding a place to pitch a tent above the high tide mark was challenging, to say the least. (See related article, "Wilderness Camping: An Olympic Event.")
The one mile hike from the trail head to the beach features lush rain forest. (See related article, "Wilderness Camping: An Olympic Event.")
The log covered beach, as seen from my campsite. (See related article, "Wilderness Camping: An Olympic Event.")

I am "dad" to my children, and a slew of other things to my wife, relatives and friends. To the rest of the world, I'm a communications consultant with a background in magazine publishing. I've served as art director on more than a dozen national and international magazine titles, and my photos have appeared on more than 40 covers (photos BY me, not OF me). I've also worked as a writer and as an editor. Favorite things? Family, friends, music, laughter, good food, fine wine, and—of course—travel
