Small 12" Laptop and Charger

Small 12" Laptop and Charger

A small laptop computer is much lighter and easier to pack and carry when traveling than larger models. It allows easy downloading of image files from the camera's memory cards, enables initial file labeling and sorting and can provide a second back-up of files to DVD or a portable hard drive to protect against loss because of equipment failure or loss/theft.

Basic Traveling Digital Camera Kit

Basic Traveling Digital Camera Kit

A simple kit like this will cover all basic photography needs, even for an extended trip. A good DSLR body of at least six megapixels, 18-70mm and 75-300mm close-focusing lenses and a polarizing filter are light, small and inconspicuous. A shock absorbing neoprene or elastic neck strap relieves carrying stress. A quick-release plate makes tripod use quick and painless when needed for low-light shots.

Extras For Traveling Digital Photographers

Extras For Traveling Digital Photographers

A shoe-mount flash unit and small flashlight(s) using rechargeable AA batteries extend the range of low-light photography that is possible. A battery charger with any required voltage adapter keeps you going indefinitely. A good pair of compact binoculars are useful for a variety of tasks.

Blank, High-Quality Data DVD's

Most laptop computers now have a built-in DVD burner and this is an excellent way to archive camera files and protect against loss. They are light weight and take up little room in a checked bag. It is also a good way to share photos and/or slide shows with cooperative models and business owners met while traveling.

High-Quality Compact Digital Camera

High-Quality Compact Digital Camera

This is the type of camera that I am never without. It fits in a shirt or pants pocket, uses rechargeable AA batteries and will fit hundreds of full-sized image files on a memory card. The image quality is not as high as from a DSLR, but it is always available!

Multi-Card Reader, Hard Drive and USB Cords

Multi-Card Reader, Hard Drive and USB Cords

Built-in card readers are fine, but many laptops won't have the right one for your camera cards. A portable hard drive powered by the USB cord provides an extra measure of protection against losing valuable image files if the laptop goes south. I always carry extra USB cords and plenty of cards to ensure against loss or breakage.

A Good Padded Photo Backpack

A Good Padded Photo Backpack

I like nondescript bags that don't draw unwanted attention. This one holds everything I need for several weeks of photography on the road(including a small laptop) and is quite comfortable to carry even loaded with 30-40 pounds of gear. It fits in a carry-on bin and the side pockets are removable.

Camera Batteries and Charger

Camera Batteries and Charger

It is always a good idea to travel with at least two fully charged camera batteries and a charger with any required voltage adatpers.

Female Wild Turkey

This turkey took up residence in the Largo Nature Preserve almost a year ago and still seems happy living there.

John Rivard has been a member since 13 June 2008 and goes by digimax7.

Currently in Clearwater, Florida.

I am a photographer/writer living in Clearwater, Florida. I like to explore the boundaries of communication and promote environmental awareness. I try to always have a camera and pen & paper with me. I like to travel slow whenever possible because usually the trip is as interesting as the destination. I am also a chef with an adventurous palette and make a point of trying as much local food as possible. At home, birds are the main focus of my photography because they are everywhere in the sunshi
