If you go to the De Young museum, go into the garden and look for the James Turrell's Three Gems in the sculpture garden. And once you are there stand underneath the sky and sing. Seriously. Sing. It's a pretty amazing place to hear oneself.
2006 World Cup fans gather to watch Italy vs France in the final match. Here fans of the Azuri erupt in cheers as they take France in the penalty shootout.
The viewing was arranged by a German who was shocked that no one had arranged an event like this. the German consulate helped for the rental of the huge screen you can just see at the right hand of the photograph.
Mission creek is all the open water left from a creek that used to run up through Marshes and up to a lake in the Mission district near Mission Dolores.
The area is now being intensively developed. This little park across the creek from new apartment buildings was the first park opened in the area.
Houseboats lay to the left, AT&T park is down the creek to the right. Behind are campuses of UCSF and massive amounts of construction, and then the Bay.
It's a fun area to wander while it is in midst of change.
Hua Zang Si is a Buddhist Temple occupying an old church in the Mission district. It's run (I think) by nuns from Taiwan who are very sweet and welcoming.
It may, however, be not quite what you expect from a Buddhist temple -- given that we tend to be more used to Zen flavors of Buddhism here in the U.S. It can seem a little garish and I think they could use a little helping gearing their english materials to an American ear.
BART - Bay Area Rapid Transit is a commuter rail line that runs through the center of San Francisco, down the peninsula, past the airport across the Bay, north and south. Its a quick and easy way to get all over the Bay area, and makes for great people watching as well.
The San Francisco Art Institute is one of my favorite places for bay watching (and taking classes). It has an incredible roof deck with a wonderful view of Alcatraz, the bay and the surrounding hills.
Ocean beach is miles and miles of sand, waves, a stiff (and usually cold) breeze, birds hunting up and down the surf, dogs racing, and people -- beach combing, running, staring at the waves, fishing, and even occasionally braving the cold, cold waves.
A dedicated Giant's fan braves a cold San Francisco night and kayaks into McCovey Cove, hoping for a home run to come his way.
The river runs through a limestone gulch? canyon? of sorts, with deeply green forest all around.
You don't think of Texas as being green, but Austin has a lot of it.
