The city authoriities allow only muted colors to be used in Bologna's architecture. These colors - terracotta, cream, soft yellow - were often used by Giorgio Morandi, the early twentieth century artist, a native son of Bologna.
Bologna is a city of towers most of which were built by wealthy families during the Middle Ages. The two most famous towers—the Asinelli and the Garisenda—are next to each other. The Asinelli was used during the Renaissance to study heavy bodies and Earth’s rotation whereas the smaller Garisenda is mentioned by Dante in his Devine Comedy. The Garisenda, the leaning tower of Bologna, is currently being studied by engineers in an attempt to straighten it. View taken from hotel breakfast room.
