Grady’s travelogue

Amsterdam Canal

Amsterdam Canal

A drowsy Sunday canal cruising in Amsterdam. Throughout the afternoon, parties were loading onto boats to enjoy the cool evening.

Norman Morning

Norman Morning

A man carries his briefcase in the early morning light in Bayeux, Normandy. Home to the Bayeux Tapestry, this ancient village is the gateway to the D-Day's infamous Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery on the bluffs above the water. After a night in an converted hostel that began life as a monastery, I left early to bus to the beaches and back before boarding a train to the Dordogne Valley in Central France.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo at Sunset

Edinburgh Military Tattoo at Sunset

Every August Scots gather at the base of Edinburgh Castle for an awesome parade filled with marching bands and twirling dancers. To get tickets I waited at the office from 5 AM after my train from London arrived in the early morning. At the end of the evening, the elderly gentleman sitting next to me, shook my hand and said "It's been an honor watching with you tonight."

Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre

Even before I moved to Florence I had heard mythic travel rumors about Cinque Terre on Italy's west coast. Above five picturesque waterfront villages steep cliffs tower over the ocean. To the west we watched magnificent sunsets from our apartment, and to the east we hiked the terraced hills between the towns. A fellow traveler journals in the afternoon sun on our balcony.

Santorini Sunset

Santorini Sunset

The classic Greek blue of a small church in the village of Oia on Santorini. This massive volcanic crater, that many believe is the resting place of the mythical Atlantis, is diverse beyond our expectations. After a day of volcanic hot springs, deserted fishing villages and dusty bookstores the sun began to set across the Mediterranean. Time to take the bus across the desert ridge to the hotel - we have a 4AM ferry to Crete.
