This shot was taken on the south-western shore of Olkhon Island, looking northward. In early May, the ice of Lake Baikal begins to crack and melt, as seen here.
In early May, the ground of Olkhon Island is still brown from the recently melted winter frost. The only sign of spring is this fuzzy purple flower which pops up all across the island, heralding warmer days to come.
This picture was taken on the eastern shore of Olkhon Island, facing north. The northern tip of the island, visible in the distant center of this shot, is called Khoboi. Khoboi means fang, as the rock formation resembles a wolf's fang.
After crossing the ice of Lake Baikal to reach the shore of Olkhon Island, I took the time to look back at the surreal scenery of Siberia.
In 2006, my friends and I traveled to Lake Baikal in Siberian Russia. Our destination was Olkhon, an island on the lake, but as Baikal was still frozen, we had to walk across the ice. Halfway across the lake we were met by a motorcycle with a side-car, the driver of which ferried us the rest of the distance across the ice to Olkhon Island.
The day that we left Olkhon Island, only a few days after we crossed the ice to reach the island, the lake had melted to the point that we could take a ferry to the mainland village of Sakhyurta.
Transportation in Siberia consists mainly of ancient vans. This van brought us from the village of Sakhyurta to the shore of Lake Baikal.
In order to reach Olkhon Island, we had to cross Lake Baikal. In early May, the lake is still frozen, but it is starting to thaw. As such, the ice is not strong enough to support cars and trucks. We had to walk.
The Hahoe Folk Village is located next to a river. For a nominal fee, you can take a traditional ferry across to a mountain with hiking trails, temples, and spectacular views.
