Sunken Pass
Sunken Pass is the pass through the mountains which separate the small village of Kul-Tur with the valley on the other side of the mountains to its south. It can be entered through the Kul-Tur Jailoo, and can be trekked on foot or by horse.
Kul-Tur Jailoo
A jailoo (pronounced jai-low) is a high mountain pasture where the Kyrgyz traditionally spent their summers. Many still do.
Anton's (У Антона)
Getting to Anton's Bar is difficult for first timers; you must follow these directions exactly: At the corner of Sovietskaya and Gorkova, turn East (away from the Vefa Center). Enter through the first wrought iron gate on your right and walk all the way to the end of the courtyard.
Barskoon Waterfall
Located approximately 20km south of the village of Barskoon (pronounced bars-kone) on the southern shore of Kyrgyzstan's Lake Issyk Kul is the Barskoon Waterfall. By car, you can reach a place where two of the three cataracts are visible, which is a great place to picnic.
Valley of the Flowers
Located less then an hour outside of Karakol near the small village of Jeti Oguz is the Valley of the Flowers. The best time to visit is during late May and June.
Holy Trinity Cathedral
In central Karakol sits the Holy Trinity Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox church built in 1895. It was used as a club during Soviet times, but has since been retored and has an active congregation.
Karakol Animal Bazaar
Every Sunday morning from 5:00am to 10:00am, people from all over north-eastern Kyrgyzstan flock to Karakol with their livestock to participate in the Karakol Animal Bazaar. The bazaar is filled with sheep, cows, goats, horses and hagglers, and it is quite a site to see.
Altyn Arashan
Altyn Arashan (Golden Spa in Kyrgyz) is a hot-springs hotel located in a high mountain valley above Karakol. Don't let the term "hot-springs hotel" fool you - this isn't your typical spa.
Between Kochkor and the Chuy River
Just north of the village of Kochkor lie freshwater springs which flow into the Chuy River. A five minute walk will lead you into this relaxing paradise, spotted with sheep, cows and horses.
The Village of Kara Suu
The tiny village of Kara-Suu is located just outside the somewhat larger village of Kochkor, just off the main road connecting Naryn with Lake Issyk-Kol. While there are not many ammenities to be found in this tiny place, the scenery is spectacular, and it is a great place to begina horse-trek.
