REI Sahara convertible pants
Lightweight, comfortable and water-resistant pants that with a zip turn into shorts and, in either form, provide an incredible amount of pocket space. (The photo is for my gear review).

Scorched Ruins
Most shouldered on, but intense sun made this tree’s ample shade one of this January day’s most popular attractions at Monte Albán. The crowd will likely grow as the year moves into heat-soaked months of early summer. Locals say it’s been getting hotter with every passing year and blame el cambio climatico, or climate change. Recommendation: Bring a parasol—or at least a hat.
