In the town of Chalkidiki (also spelled Halkidiki), right outside of Thessaloniki, Greece, is a perfect spot to get away. You won't find any ruins or ancient architecture, but the beaches are peaceful and surrounding areas pleasant.
This old fort is along a red dirt road on the way to Busua, a tiny fishing village and beach town in southern Ghana. The main track from Accra to Busua will take you by it, although it is worth stopping and exploring the many areas around Busua and the other coastal towns.
A fantastic place to spend the night. The little town of Larabanga is a wonderful stop-over, with friendly people and an 'inn' run by twin brothers.
