Balcony of a Pension

Balcony of a Pension

In Lisbon, we stayed in a small, family run pension. Our room had French doors that opened onto this balcony where the owners line-dried the laundry. Lisbon's charm made itself immediately apparent.

Terraces

Terraces

The mountains throughout Peru are often terraced for growing crops, but at Machu Picchu the slope is particularly steep.

Guard house

Guard house

Looking back up to the guard house at Machu Picchu, where all of those iconic shots of this place are taken. The area below is a maze of living quarters, places of worship, plazas and terraced slopes.

Illuminated

Illuminated

I came to the Golden Temple first during the day. It was fairly crowded with the devout and tourists alike. I decided to return that night. The solemnity of the place was easier to absorb without the long lines, and the illuminated temple reflects beautifully in the surrounding pool.

Tourists at the Taj Mahal

Tourists at the Taj Mahal

At first I was upset that these guys walked into my frame, but I think the photograph turned out much more interesting with them in the foreground, silhouetted by the Taj Mahal. After I took this shot, they came over and introduced themselves to me. Nice kids.

Mosque at the Taj Mahal

Mosque at the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is flanked on the left and right by beautiful red mosques that are often overlooked.

Fiesta de la Cruz

Fiesta de la Cruz

In the first few days of May, Peruvians celebrate la Fiesta de la Cruz--the Festival of the Cross. Long processions, including these men in a local costume, carry the cross through the streets. In Aquas Calientes, the town below Machu Picchu, the festival also brings live music, dancing and fireworks. Catholicism in the Andes blends seamlessly with ancient pagan beliefs, creating a beautiful and uniquely Peruvian cosmology.

Permanently Under Construction

Permanently Under Construction

Building on Barcelona's most famous landmark, La Sagrada Familia, began in 1882 and is scheduled for completion in 2026. Of course, projects like this never finish within their budgets or allotted time. But, seeing the construction of this Surrealist masterpiece is part of the fun.

Looking for Flamingos

Looking for Flamingos

An early morning excursion took us to the island of Santa Cruz, looking for nesting flamingos. We didn't see any, but this serene, deserted beach was full of other wildlife.

Seeking Refuge

Seeking Refuge

Europe was in the grips of an historic heat wave while I was in Barcelona. The cool shade in the inner courtyard of a cathedral sheltered me from the brutal mid-day sun and provided a respite from the bustling streets.

Alexis Harmon

Alexis Harmon has been a member since 11 May 2008 and goes by pdxalexis.

Currently in Portland, Oregon.

I am aspiring to something more; I just haven't decided exactly what. I live in Portland, but I'm always looking for a way to see more of the world. I like to explore, write, read, take photographs, bake, listen to bluegrass and have picnics with red wine in plastic goblets. I love to learn new languages and read the international news.
