Brookly Bridge To Manhattan

Brookly Bridge To Manhattan

Somewhere along the line, I took a liking to the panoramic image. The first panorama I recall having shot was in the summer of 1978 while living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Along with a woman I worked with and dated at the time, I drove up to the north shore of Lake Superior. We stopped in Duluth and I used her little 110 format camera (remember those?) to shoot a panorama of Duluth from a lighthouse jetty in the bay.

Times Square

Times Square

A couple of friends and I spent the day taking photographs around midtown Manhattan. Eventually, we wandered to Times Square and I was told I just had to see Times Square at night. So, later, I enlisted another friend to make the trek from Brooklyn.

I must admit that it's quite an impressive display of lights, but it's not my cup of meat.

Night Bridges

Night Bridges

While in New York City last year, I stayed with a friend who was busy with work or family much of the time I was in town. The night before I left to came home, however, we met for dinner in Chinatown, then meandered back to her place on Wall Street. Along the way, we managed to pass along the East River to see the lighted Manhattan (left) and Brooklyn Bridges.

Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge

My mother grew up in the Bronx, married my father at 18 and moved to Ohio.

As a kid, my family made a few trips to New York to visit my grandfather in Manhattan, relatives on Long Island and New Jersey, and my mother's childhood best friend on Staten Island.

With the exception of riding the Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan we'd done nothing typically touristy.

Until last year, I'd not really spent any time in New York as an adult, and I'd been wanting to walk the Brooklyn Bridge for a long time.

place Blanche

Place Blanche is one of my favourite places in Paris. Perhaps because I stayed most of my three-plus weeks there (in the building almost to the far right in the photo); perhaps because it always seemed to be so active. Any time of day or night, there were tourists taking photographs of le Moulin Rouge. Tour buses would stop, passengers would get out, take their pictures, get back on the bus... to be whisked off to the next stop along the way.

I liked, too, that Montmartre was just up the hill.

On pont Victoria at the edge of the snowy, frozen St. Lawrence River.

I was in Montréal for a conference, and decided to spend a lot of time outside the hotel, walking around the city, particularly old Montréal. I think it was where I developed my first urge to see Paris. Later that year, I did just that.
