John’s travelogue

Scrub Pine

Scrub Pine

Chatham, MA

05/01/08

Scub Pine is to be found everywhere you travel on The Cape.

Mayo House

Mayo House

Chatham, MA

05/01/08

This 3/4 Cape built in 1818 is just one of many that you will see as you drive from town to town.

Highland Light (Cape Cod Light)

Highland Light (Cape Cod Light)

Truro, MA

04/27/08

The rock in the foreground marks the spot where Highland Light originally stood from 1857 to 1996. A golf course, Highland Links, lies on either side of the lighthouse with a cart path that runs right in front of it.

Race Point Beach

Race Point Beach

Provincetown, MA

04/27/08

Humpback whales can be seen from the shore if you happen to arrive at the right time.

Day's Cottages

Day's Cottages

Truro, MA

04/27/08

Operating since 1931, these 23 2 bedrooms and a kitchen cottages attract people even if their not staying there. A little store on the premises sells food and supplies should you feel the need.

Marconi Beach

Marconi Beach

Wellfleet, MA

04/27/08

It was on one of the high sand dunes overlooking the beach that Marconi built his first wireless transmission station and sent his first wireless transmission to England. Most of that original site has been since claimed by the sea.

Nauset Light Beach

Nauset Light Beach

Eastham, MA

04/26/08

Eastham has three fabulous beaches: Coast Guard Beach, Nauset Light Beach, and First Encounter Beach. All of them will not disappoint. First Encounter Beach has what might be the best sunset on The Cape.

The Nauset Lighthouse still guards the beach while the Three Sisters Lighthouses have been moved back too far to be of any use to navigation, but are still picturesque.

Stoney Brook Grist Mill

Stoney Brook Grist Mill

Brewster, MA

04/25/08

Lonely Planet's Cape Cod, Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard guide describes the Stoney Brook Grist Mill thusly: "This town-owned mill is one of the Cape's lushest and most tranquil spots. The water wheel still turns the machinery that grinds cornmeal, and a small museum has Brewster memorabilia.

Try to visit the adjacent open-air Herring Run during the time when thousands of herring migrate from the ocean to fresh water in order to spawn in the pond above the mill. Dates change annually, but mid-April to mid-May is a good bet."

San Ramon Central Park

San Ramon Central Park

San Ramon is a lovely community in the valley east of San Francisco and Alameda along I680 between Walnut Creek and Dublin. It's a good location to be in if one has the time to do some exploring of that area of California.

Agios Minás

Agios Minás

This is the church whose blue dome and white bell tower dominates that well know Santorini photo. As soon as I landed and took the Teleferik (cable car) up to the town of Fira that stretches out along the spine of Santorini I showed people the picture and asked where I should go to take one of my own. When I got there I found that they had painted the church, the blue dome was now white and the white bell tower was now red. To make matters worse I would have to climb up the other, taller bell tower to take the famous picture and it was closed to the public.

John Linton

John Linton has been a member since 17 April 2008 and goes by ride0583.

Currently in sufferable.

I am a retired secondary teacher (32 years) who spent his childhood developing his skills as a military brat while the family moved from one location to another. I attended Gorham State College to avoid the draft, somehow graduated with a teaching degree in the Social Studies, was hired by the Westerly School Department in 1970, and have lived in Westerly, RI ever since. When people ask me what I do now I tell them "Nothing," but I do dabble in photography and travel whenever I can.
