Looking mauka (mountain side) from Tantalus Heights, Honolul

Looking mauka (mountain side) from Tantalus Heights, Honolul

This stretch of Tantalus looks down on the valley of Manoa (home to the University of Hawaii) and then out towards Honolulu. The opposite ridge is called Waahila Ridge, and has a great trail leading to the third largest peak on Oahu.

Mokpo - Gateway to Dadohae

Mokpo - Gateway to Dadohae

From atop Mt. Yudal, a statue of the Korean admiral and hero Yi Sunsin seems to stand guard over the coastal city of Mokpo. A comparatively small city of 250,000, Mokpo serves as the primary gateway to the many islands of Korea's Dadohae National Maritime Park.

Jian, China

Jian, China

Tomb of a Goguryeo's 5th century King Jangsu (according to the Chinese) or simply an aristocrat's tomb (according to the Koreans)?

Jian, China

Jian, China

In the small city of Jian in far northwestern China, and a stone's throw from North Korea, remnants of the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo - which thrived from the 2nd to 7th centuries - cover the landscape. This is an ancient pyramidal tomb of a Goguryeo king.

Heuksando Island

Heuksando Island

The main road of Heuksando, in Dadohae National Maritime Park, winds its way to the sea.

The Island of Heuksando

The Island of Heuksando

Heuksando is perhaps the most well-known of Dadohae National Maritime Park's many islands. People come most to view its many unique rock formations, carved through eons of contact with the sea. The seafood's not bad either.

Honolulu Skyline from Tantalus Heights

Honolulu Skyline from Tantalus Heights

Tantalus mountain is my favorite place to ride my bike. The challenge of the ride up the back slope is rewarded by the descent down the front, with views like this.

Above Honolulu

Above Honolulu

The most commanding view of Honolulu from Tantalus Heights belongs to an abandoned home.

Currently in Honolulu.

I am a freelance writer and the Korea Collection Librarian at the University of Hawaii. Like most everyone here, I too have a passion for travel and the unpredictability it brings. I'm always open to experience something new. Of course I have a special interest in Korea that started with orders to study Korean in the army. It's good to travel. It exercises the imagination. At the same time it's always good to return to the tradewinds of Hawaii.
