Dale Chihuly conceived of a pedestrian bridge from his native city's downtown to the site of the Tacoma Museum of Glass, spanning numerous railroad tracks and an Interstate Highway and reconnecting the city with its waterfront. He loaned the city a large number of his studio glass art works to showcase in the public walkway. These seaforms are in the ceiling of one section of the bridge.

The Chihuly Bridge of Glass connects downtown Tacoma, Washington with the Thea Foss Waterway and the Museum of Glass situated on the waterway. The former railroad passenger station, the copper-domed Union Station to the right, now houses the region's United States Courthouse as well as numerous works of glass by the city's native son, Dale Chihuly.

Arthur Erickson designed the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington to reflect Tacoma's industrial past and to reside comfortably in a low-rise waterfront environment. The steel cone recalls the wood burners of old sawmills that formerly dotted the local landscape.

The Chihuly Bridge of Glass with its towering blue crystal columns carries pedestrians over railroad tracks and a highway to Tacoma's Museum of Glass. The museum's shiny metal cone is the architect's homage to the wood burners that used to dot Tacoma's landscape when it was the center of the Northwest's timber industry.
