Story written 24 July 2008
This is the true story of a lad who grew up with a dream and chased his fear of making it come true so far around the world that the dream found him. No names were changed because no one was innocent.
Fish and squid drying outside a restaurant along the harbor of Naxos Town, Naxos, Greece.
A friend said she wanted to see a picture of me simply having fun. I took this for her while scootering along the hills of Naxos, Greece.
This was the only club in the very small village of Sougia, Crete. Really something to come across out of the blue, especially being from Alabama. Seems the owner visited the states for a period of time, and when he returned to Sougia, opened the club. Loved Sougia, anyway, but this made it feel even more homey.
Nectarius (in white shirt, waiting on customers), the owner of the restaurant, another friend, Manos, and I would sit and talk for hours, usually at the very table Nectarius is waiting on. Manos spoke fluent English, but Nectarius' was a bit sketchy at best, though still better than my Greek. Anytime I stopped by, Nectarius always referred to me as, "America." "America," he would ask, "What you eat?" Two of the nicest guys I met throughout my odyssey. Please visit if you're ever in Iraklio, Crete. Tell Nectarius, "Ime Amerikos; dhen Katalaveno." He'll smile.
Interesting misspelling of Bungalows, Paleochora, Crete.
The beautifully clear waters of the Libyan Sea, Paleochora, Crete
This is fish and squid drying outside a restaurant on Naxos. The fish have spices sprinkled on them, allowing them to dry into the fish.
This is Pension Irene I; there is also an Irene II. My room is directly above the sign. Mama Irene and Stavros are two of the nicest people I've ever met.
End of the day, walking the streets of Iraklio, the long shadows begged to be photographed.
