Driftwood on A Beach in Northern Iceland

Driftwood on A Beach in Northern Iceland

My travel partner Sean kept referring to the driftwood hotel in Iceland and for some reason the detail stuck in my mind so that every time we passed driftwood on the beach i remembered his descriptions of Iceland - the ones that made me want to see it for myself. the funny thing is - there was no driftwood hotel, just the occasional pieces of driftwood on almost every stone cold beach we passed in Iceland.

On a detailed map of Iceland, you will see maybe 150 towns dotting its perimeter. But what you find, with very few exceptions, are a handful of buildings, population 3-5.

This photograph captures 90% of a town called Kirkjebol and its desolation, at least in winter, is a defining aspect of Iceland not often included in photos.

Fighting the wind to get back to our hotel room, i turned around for a moment and shot this picture as an attempt to record the wonderful feelings of helplessness it caused as i was buffeted to and fro from all angles.

One of the only quiet nights in 8 days, accompanied by the fluffy coat of a soft snowfall. I spent 2 hours there, on my side or on my back in different spots on the wet black rocks of the Djupavik shore, right alongside the road, waiting for the right light, capturing every possibility i could in the time i had. This evening i felt like a lost man (or woman) finding some treasure that i couldn't take with me because of it's size and quantity.
