A community of 2,000 people live on "La Isla de los Uros", the floating islands of Lake Titicaca near Puno, Peru. A self-governed, peaceful community, the Uros are decendents of one of the most ancient indigenous cultures of America. Separate floating masses are formed by using the abundant reed/totora material found in the shallow parts of the lake. During a visit to the islands we were served homemade bread from a miniature reed boat (a great souvenir to remember the experience!). The colorful hats, made from dyed Alpaca fur, also carry historical significance. A truly memorable day.
