This bronze statue of fictional-character Ignatius J. Reilly is located under the clock of the former site of the D.H. Holmes Department Store on Canal Street in New Orleans. The statue represents Ignatius' first appearance in John Kennedy Toole’s classic novel, A Confederacy of Dunces. Unlike many public sculptures that present their subjects on elevated pedestals, Ignatius appears at ground level. He seems to regard each visitor with suspicion -- looking the dunce squarely in the eye.
