Actually, the architect (Kurokawa) recently ran for Mayor of Tokyo, though he lost. I suspect that had he won, he'd have somehow put a stop to the demolition. As it stands now, he's trying to purchase the building outright.
This is really amazing. It's not often that you get to see such variant vision become manifest in urban spaces. I mean, what would the neighbors think?
