Frescos in the Aya Sofya

In 1453, the extordinary Aya Sofya church was converted into a mosque and the Christian frescos were covered up with plaster (which actually helped to preserve them.) The frescos began to be uncovered in 1929 during the effort to open the building as a world heritage museum.
