Once a milestone in prison reform, this castle-like structure in the middle of Philadelphia sat abandoned for about 15 years before becoming one of the best tours in the city. (November 10, 2007)
Eastern State Penitentiary is located in Philadelphia. It was a ground breaking prison and housed prisoners from 1829 - 1971. After many battles over the buliding and the land the prison was opened for tours in 1994. My first visit to Eastern State was in the spring of 2007. My husband and I spent many hours walking around he lisitened to the audio tape while I took pictures. I look forward to my next trip when I am visiting friends and family in the area.
