Last year I was working in Kabul and had a friend who was helping resettle refugees in Herat, so I decided to take a trip out there. Herat sits near the border with Iran and you can see the Iranian influence in the food, architecture, and some of the women's clothing.
In central Herat, you'll find alleyways around the Alexander the Great fortress that are fun to walk around in. You'll find burkas, Chinese toys, dried fruit and nuts, rugs, candy makers, and all kinds of other stuff. Just don't be careless and make sure you show respect. People are quite friendly, but bad things still happen in Herat.
