Place to see: Altamont Motorsports Park, Tracy, California, United States

About this place:

Altamont Raceway is where you can combine a bit of rock and roll history with an a full evening of tradin' paint. Yes, this is *that* Altamont — the site of the infamous 1969 Rolling Stones concert during which one attendee was beaten to death. No trace of the concert remains, but today Altamont Raceway Park is a great place to take in an evening of motorsports on a short oval track. The racing is loud and aggressive, with lots of bumping and nudging as the cars speed around the small track. The crowds are enthusiastic, and the dry Central Valley backdrop is pure American Gothic. Altamont Raceway Park is about an hour from San Francisco (depending on the traffic around Pleasanton and Livermore), so it's great for an evening of Something Totally Different. Bring a jacket! Remember all those windmills on Altamont Pass? They're there for a reason -- it's always windy. You can check the race schedule here.
