Just outside the northern gate of Diocletian's Palace, the statue towers above the constant stream of tourists touching his big toe.
Gregorius of Nin (Grgur Ninski) was a Croatian bishop who fought during the 10th century for the use of his Croatian language in church services. His statue has become one of Split's iconic images and rubbing his left big toe is said to bring good luck. It was sculpted by the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic whose castle and house are located in the Meje neighbourhood.
