After being the royal residence for 750 years, the fort was abandoned by its rulers in 1945 for a modern palace lower in the valley. In a state of ruin and verging on collapse, it was painstaking restored in the 1990's as a joint British-Pakistani effort.
This fort served as the royal palace of Hunza for over 750 years. Perched on a high point with amazing natural defenses, views from the roof extend over the entire valley. A special seating area was established for the royal family to view the latest polo match on the grounds just below. It now serves as a museum.
