Place to see: Smithfield Street Bridge, Mount Oliver, Pennsylvania, United States

The Smithfield Street Bridge

The Smithfield Street Bridge

Walking across into downtown Pittsburgh. From here you really know your in "Iron City".

About this place:

There are a lot bridges entering Pittsburgh. This one is my favorite.

I've liked it since my first visit back in the mid 80's.

When you look at this bridge, I learn two things.

1. You definitely are entering the "Iron City". It seems like no steel was spared to construct this span.

2. This bridge does more than merely facilitate traffic in and out of downtown Pittsburgh like modern structures. The portals built in 1915 feature ornaments, in almost gargoyle fashion, that honor the men of Industry and Miners.
