One of Mount Ruapehu's icy peaks, as seen from the Turoa ski field.
Mount Ruapehu is an active volcano in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand. New Zealand's two largest ski fields are situated near the top; and when the weather cooperates, they both offer great skiing and expansive, panoramic views of the North Island. It is also possible to hike to the crater lake - especially in summer, when the landscape is dominated by black, jagged boulders.
