Place to sleep: excalibur hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

Excalibur

Excalibur

Just down the street, they've blown up a couple of old casinos, like the Stardust, to put up billion-dollar wonders for an economy we all think will grow forever. This particular hotel, the Excalibur, keeps re-making itself.

About this place:

It's in the heart of playtime. I called a number on a billboard outside Las Vegas as I drove in, asked for the best deal they could give:$77 a night. The swirl of slots and desperate or piqued faces, tourists like tuna traveling the paths of opportunity or dejection, win or lose, these all hit me as I walk with my bags to check in. And then I look out my window.

We stayed at the Excalibur when we were in Vegas. We were actually just passing through in our 4 month jaunt around the US. We stayed one day. I did not put one nickel in any slot machine. My husband did while I slept late. He won $45. When he came back to tell me about his luck, I told him I still wanted to sleep and sent him out to play some more. He came back and told me he lost it all. That was the extent of our gambling. We went to the indoor arena and watched the jousting of knights on chargers, inside the hotel of course. Then we moved on to photograph Lake Mead. One day of Vegas was enough for me. Next time we go to/thru Vegas, I want to see the Cirque de Soleil, to see Seanie's dancer.
