Place to sleep: Gene's Pineaire Campground, Washington, California, United States

Yuba River

Yuba River

The south fork of the Yuba river in washington california. The river here is remarkably clear and cool as it is all meltwater from the sierra snow.

About this place:

Gene's Pineaire, is right on the banks of the Yuba river in Washington California. The town was an old mining town that is now on one of the most beautiful stretches of river in the Sierras. Nearby there are natural water slides carved into the granite and pools that are 20 feet deep but so clear that you would swear they are only 2 feet deep. Aside from swimming, you can pan for gold right from your campsite.

We just came back from Washington, Ca where my wife used to visit as a child from her dads nearby cabin. Found the people of the town both helpful and friendly. The swimming hole by the bridge was glorious and as a right leg amputee is was refreshing to go swimming without the stares all day. The locals there with us were great. One in particular a man named Rama came and traded notes on his missing appendage which I found very welcoming and touching. He told us about a nearby property for sale and you can't be more inviting than to invite someone to be a neighbor. A wonderful paradise on earth with earthy good people. 5 huge stars. Called Gene's Pineaire to reserve a spot for a more lengthy exploration.

Washington is a beautiful area. Take care when passing thru though not to make eye contact with the motley crew rocking on their porches or wandering aimlessly on the street. I sometimes wonder if parts of "Deliverance" were filmed there!
