Flowers in Mordor

Flowers in Mordor

Brief bits of color amidst the endless green and black of the Valley of Fires.

About this place:

A recreation area in the middle of a long stretch of barren scenery. Hiking trails lead through many miles of twisted, black lava floes. The view from above is amazing; a swath of blackness which cuts through the desert. From the trails, one can see bits of color amidst the black, as various plants and wildlife have somehow adapted to make this their home.

We almost missed this on the long trek from Santa Fe to White Sands. Just a nondescript sign along the road pointing to the "Valley of Fires." Entranced with the name, but unsure of what to expect, we followed the sign; over a crest in the hill, the enormity of the landscape was revealed to us. A seemingly endless swath of black and green cutting through the heart of the infinite brown that is New Mexico. It's especially striking in comparison to the stark whiteness of White Sands, just a few miles south of us.
