Place to sleep: Gite D'etape (1960 meters), Aroumd, Morocco

In the Gite

In the Gite

Lemon yellow walls, plants and simple but elegant furnishings could be found throughout the gite that I stayed in after climbing Toubkal in Morocco. The light in the morning was as you see it here.

About this place:

If you find yourself trekking in the High Atlas of Morocco, make sure that your trek leads you to the Gite D'Etape in Aroumd. The gite has several comfortable (elegant feeling after 6 days in the mountains) bedrooms, hot showers, an the views of the valley are spectacular. Sitting sipping hot tea on the roof patio, you can see Toubkal. In fall, the walnut trees turn yellows and oranges, giving a fire like appearance at dusk - especially around the village mosque. This was the perfect last stop after a week on my feet!

I woke up on Thursday morning at 3:30 to start the trek up to the summit of Toubkal at 5am. The trek was ice and scree covered but the summit was spectacular. After coming down the mountain, we had a quick lunch at the refuge and then hiked 4 hours to Aroumd to stay at Gite D'etape. The gite has absolutely amazing views of the mosque, Toubkal and the fall colors of walnut trees. We watched villagers carrying bags of walnuts from the recent harvest, drank mint tea, and met the 1st graders at the village school.
