While it's true, no one thing defines any place...a good argument could be made for Lebanon and its Cedar Trees & Wood. The Lebanon Cedar has always been the national emblem of Lebanon, and it is seen on the Lebanese Flag.

About this place:

The Mediterranean Sea dips into the Lebanese countryside in the picturesque Bay of Jounieh.

Jounieh is the capital of the Kerserwan region and is home to the prestigious Casino du Liban, as well as LBC (Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation). Also, in only nine minutes, Téléphérique (a cable-car system) transports passengers from Jounieh to an altitude of 650 meters at the Our Lady of Lebanon shrine in Harissa. Currently, the ride from Jounieh to Harissa on the Téléférique costs 7,500 L.L or US $5.00.

Distance to notable areas: Beirut Airport, 20 Km; the Cedars of Lebanon, 100km; Byblos, 10 km; Jeita Grotto, 8 km; Harissa, 7 km; and Tripoli, 50km.

    Lots of places to grab a bite to eat in Jounieh to fuel your shopping. Dotted along the main boulevard are numerous shawarma (think: gyro) spots including "The King of Chicken!" which is an institution, and delicious. Locals all over Jounieh head there, particularly at lunch, so there may be a small line. Just place your order, take a seat at one of the cafe tables outside, grab a Lebanese magazine or newspaper from the street vendor and sit and watch the cars go by. They also have T.V.s on that play Melody Arabia songs (think: Arabic MTV).

    The Bay of Jounieh is a popular Christian area (just north of Beirut) known for it's shopping, particularly, as THE place to buy silver (although they do also have gold). I had been wanting a Hamsa (Middle-Eastern symbol to protect against the "evil eye") pendant...and I scored a unique sterling silver, hand-crafted one in Jounieh--with a long chain--for about $5 USD. I almost fell over. I bought a 24k. gold one for my best friend for not much more...infinitely better than a souvenir t-shirt--and guaranteed to get more use. :)
