About this place:

Sapelo Island is located off the coast of Georgia, roughly midway between Brunswick and Savannah. The few residents of the island are African American descendants of gullah/geechee African communities, brought to the island as slaves. Most of the island is a wildlife reserve, owned and managed by the state of Georgia. Non residents can only visit the island as part of a guided tour, and tours must be booked in advance. A schedule for the ferry and guided tours can be located on the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve website. Tours will take you through the current geechee community of Hog Hammock, show you old slave quarters, take you through the Reynolds Mansion and the Sapelo Lighthouse, and show you around the beautiful beach areas.
