The ancient city ramparts once ran all the way to the walls of the Golden Gates, and the only way into the city was through the Gates. Now only a small segment of the ramparts remains, and the ramparts no longer touch the Gates.
The Golden Gates were constructed in 1158, as the fortified western entrance to the city of Vladimir. It remains a central landmark of the city, and houses a small museum.
