The American Hotel in one of southern California's great ghost towns.
Often times referred to as the Bodie of southern California, Cerro Gordo was an incredibly wealthy mining town that helped fund the creation of the Los Angeles shipping trade. Now it is a bit difficult to get to on a pretty narrow dirt road that almost certainly requires 4 wheel drive to reach. The town is owned by a guy named Mike Patterson who's wife grew up there. He keeps it in mostly a state of arrested decay but has fixed up the main hotel in town. Mike is a great guy and a good storyteller and will keep you occupied with lots of great stories of what life was like in the town and in the mine.
Make sure to call ahead and he can let you know the condition of the road. 760-876-5030
